FIBA Asia – Peace Through Basketball

FIBA Asia is the governing body for basketball in Asia. With 44 National Federations affiliated FIBA Asia is one of the largest among the five FIBA zones – FIBA Europe, FIBA Americas, FIBA Africa and FIBA Oceania are the others.

The members of the FIBA Asia family bring a diversity of cultures and languages making FIBA Asia the most varied, vivid and vibrant basketball community in the world.

As the governing body, FIBA Asia is responsible for controlling and developing the sport of basketball in Asia.

Administration and Structure

FIBA Asia applies an inclusive and consensual approach as a policy in running its affairs involving each and every affiliate National Federation in its decision-making process. Any member of FIBA Asia can suggest ideas and changes in policy at any time, which are discussed and decided by the FIBA Asia Central Board and FIBA Asia Executive Committee.

FIBA Asia Subzones

For matters of administration and smooth functioning of its affairs FIBA Asia is divided into five FIBA Asia Subzones:

·         East Asia

·         South East Asia

·         Middle Asia

·         Gulf

·         West Asia

Each subzone is headed by a President and a Secretary General chosen by, and from, the National Federations in the respective subzone. The subzones also choose and nominate their representatives to the Central Board and Executive Committee.

FIBA Asia Permanent Committees

FIBA Asia Permanent Committees meet regularly to discuss and decide upon ideas in the key areas of the basketball world.

The Permanent Committees suggest the ideas to the Central Board and Executive Committee, who then take a final decision.

Every Permanent Committee is headed by a Chairman and is comprised of five members – one representing each sub zone.

Each of the following Permanent Committee has a specific task assigned:

• Marketing, Promotion & Media committee
• Finance Committee
• Competition Committee
• Legal Matters & Eligibility Committee
• Youth Committee
• Coaches Committee
• Women’s Committee
• Medical Committee

FIBA Asia Competitions

FIBA Asia’s main and most important task is to promote the sport of basketball in Asia. Organizing and conducting competitions in a proper and professional manner is a key component in achieving this task.

The competitions under the FIBA Asia umbrella range from tournaments for clubs to age-group competitions.

Played once every two years by Senior Men’s National teams, the FIBA Asia Championship is also the qualifying event for either the Olympics or the FIBA World Championship.

FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN

Played once every two years by Senior Women’s National teams, the FIBA Asia Championship for Women is also the qualifying event for either the Olympics or the FIBA World Championship for Women.

FIBA ASIA CUP

(Earlier known as FIBA ASIA STANKOVIC CUP)

Played once every two years – alternating with the years of the FIBA Asia Championship – by Senior Men’s National teams, the FIBA Asia Stankovic Cup Championship is the qualifying event for the following FIBA Asia Championship. The winners automatically qualify and the top five earn additional berths for their respective subzones.

FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONS CUP

Played by club teams, Champions in their respective countries, the FIBA Asia Champions Cup is the premier club competition in the FIBA Asia calendar. It is played every year, and will act as the qualifying event when the FIBA World Club Championship is launched.
